Devotion WilliamsburgA fine example of earnest preaching and the commissioning of a Gospel minister in the wake of the Great Awakening. Abner Bayley [1716 1798] was settled at Salem, New Hampshire in 1740, immediately the throes of the Great Awakening. Bayley was an earnest evangelical, but his diary reveals him to have been deeply concerned about the "cult of personality" at play in the Awakening, viz., the popularity of individual traveling preachers like George
