Although Friedrich never traveled to the Arctic, he conducted extensive studies of ice on the River Elbe near Dresden and likely drew inspiration from William Edward Parry's 18191820 expedition to locate the Northwest Passage. The painting's focal point is a tower of ice formed by sheets colliding with one another. Upon
