The PUBlic Window: ANNA MUDDIMAN

WINDOW SHOPPING
2024
‘Window Shopping’ features a shattered window crafted from recycled antique glass and second-hand crystal glassware. The broken window serves as a striking symbol of abandoned shopping centres and disused retail spaces, increasingly prevalent in today’s economic climate. Inside, the box is lined with rich blue velvet, an evocative detail inspired by Victorian jewellery shop display cabinets, which hail back to the origins of the high street in the 18th and 19th century.
As the cost-of-living crisis reduces public spending and the expense of maintaining these spaces rises, independent shops and businesses face growing risks of closure. This decline threatens not only local economies but also the cultural vibrancy of communities.
The latest research from PwC reveals that in the UK, 6,945 outlets shut in 2024, equating to 38 closures per day—an increase from 36 per day in 2023. This rate of closures outpaces new openings, which average just 25 per day, resulting in a net loss of 12 shops and businesses daily.
‘Window Shopping’ highlights the importance of supporting local independent businesses. By repurposing antique glass, it nods to the origins of the high street while encouraging conversations about the value of craft, cultural resilience and the strength in community.
