The PUBlic Window: NAT LOFTUS

PROMINENT OBJECTS
2025
Nat Loftus is an artist living in North Tyneside, having moved to the region from Sheffield in 2022. A self-taught painter and collage artist, she uses a range of mediums and materials to tell stories of human transience, playing on the borders where joy and grief meet.
Loftus’ work confronts a deep desire for belonging and security in an impermanent world. Detached, isolated houses and figures stare down the void, in need of reassurance. Considering our built environment, storytelling, and the art we make as ritual protection against mortality, Loftus’ work becomes a self-referential search for the fleeting sense of joy, control and legacy we experience in the process of creating something.
‘Prominent Objects’ is a collage based on a small one-storey home she passes often. The house – removed from its street, neighbourhood, town – is exposed to eternity. The comfort blankets between our immediate shelters and the further reaches of our universe have been stripped.
